Online English Development Program
An 8-Week Academic and English Language Enrichment Experience
Bridgeport International Academy (BIA) is pleased to offer an eight-week online program designed for international students seeking to strengthen their English language skills through an engaging American educational experience.
Rather than focusing exclusively on traditional English language instruction, students will develop their English proficiency through four academic courses taught by American teachers. This approach allows students to expand their vocabulary, improve reading and writing skills, and become more comfortable using English in an academic setting.
The program is offered three times per year, during the fall, spring, and summer, providing students with a flexible opportunity to experience American-style education from their home country.
Elements of writing, Part A
This course encompasses instruction in the various elements of the English language, including grammar, writing, reading and vocabulary. The majority of the course will concentrate on students developing in-depth knowledge of grammar, such as use of prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, and verb tenses. By the end of the course, students will have built essential fundamental knowledge of English grammar mechanics, which they will apply and utilize in all their future English classes at BIA.
Ancient Civilizations, Part A
This course begins with foundations of civilization in prehistory and concludes with the rise of Europe. Among the civilizations highlighted are those in Africa, the Fertile Crescent, the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Americas. During each historical period, the focus will be on vital political, economic, intellectual, geographic, social, cultural and religious themes. Students should emerge with a keen awareness of the impact geography has had on the development of civilization, the rich contribution of the world’s religions to human development, and a very practical knowledge of where countries are located. Upon finishing this course, students will have an increased understanding of the development of ancient civilizations and how that has impacted and created the world that we live in today.
Earth Science, Part A
This course will cover two of the four main areas of earth science: geology and oceanography. The topics that will be examined in depth in this course include lessons on minerals, rocks, earthquakes, plate tectonics, volcanos, mountain building, geologic time, the ocean floor, ocean water and life, and ocean circulation. Hands-on learning is an essential element of the BIA educational model which will include two learning projects in the semester. Students will experience for themselves how hands-on learning plays such an important role in their educational growth and development as students of BIA! Plate boundaries and natural resources will be the two topics that the projects will center on. Each student will be given the freedom to utilize his/her own unique creative abilities to create a presentation for the two projects.The projects are designed to support and empower each student’s unique learning styles!
Character Education, PART A
Intro to Character will survey BIA’s Character Education program. The class will focus on giving online students an introduction to the four themes of character education. The first theme will focus on the concept of Identity. Students will be challenged to define Identity as well as investigate aspects of their own character and personality. The second theme will focus on character traits that are respected across cultures. Students will discuss responsibility, self-discipline, perseverance, and gratitude. The third theme will focus on world belief systems. Students will survey Eastern philosophies and Western religions. The fourth theme will investigate the modern world. Students will discuss society and the media as well as other grounded topics relevant to contemporary times. Intro to Character is mainly a discussion-based class so online students will have the opportunity to interact with other students around the world and hopefully build relationships with teachers and students before coming to BIA.
Through this eight-week experience, students will have the opportunity to strengthen their English language skills, develop academic vocabulary across multiple subjects, improve their confidence communicating with American teachers, and become more familiar with American classroom expectations.
The program also provides students considering future study in the United States with an introduction to American-style education, helping them build the language skills and confidence needed for a successful educational experience abroad.
