Course Description:

This course will offer introductory level of hands-on computer lab training.

As basic sessions, the initial lessons start with study of Primal PC and Network systems, and it follows to Keyboarding practice. Lessons advance to Microsoft application software for Documentation, Spreadsheet, and Database practices. Presentation practice with projectors will be provided with Power Point lessons. Graphic application software and presentation software lesson will be provided as intermediate practice.

Spring semester lessons will be performed of building Website using HTML and JAVA Language. Students will learn the basic concept of coding programs. There will be mini projects and term projects to design Graphics such as posters and Web banners and Web pages. There will be occasional Video presentations to increase knowledge of technology applications and history of computer industries. With the accumulation of computer lab training, students will construct school Website as cooperative projects.

 

Course Objectives:    

General education;

To understand the fundamentals of computer operation systems, study of basic PC structures and Network system. Learn and discuss about computer ethics and career plan.

Broaden perspective to technology concepts, applications and history.

Applications;

Get trained with authoring software programs; Keyboard pro, MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe PageMaker, CGI, HTML, DHTML, JAVA.

 

Goals of Course:
Students will:

  1. learn basic concepts of PC and Network structure.
  2. learn keyboard positioning and basic stroking in blind touch
  3.  learn to use the MS Word documentation software
  4. understand the spreadsheet software, and learn the concept of Database
  5. design outline of presentation and create Power Point presentation slide
  6. practice how to present Power Point slides.
  7. learn about concepts of computer ethics
  8. practice Photoshop software and create posters and Web banners.
  9. practice Adobe PageMaker
  10. gain a good understanding of HTML and have hands-on experience of programming HTML
  11. have hands-on experience of programming Java  
  12. have hands-on experience of designing Webpage

 

 

Projects and homework:

There will be two major projects (one due at the midterm, and one due at the final test period), and two to three minor projects, quizzes and occasional homework.

 

Makeup policy:

There will be no makeup class to be provided. If a student is absent from a class, the student will be expected to stay extra hours or study at home to make up the missed class in order to catch up the sessions. The lesson can be self guided by online textbook and materials. 

 

Textbook:

All textbooks will be provided by online, and it will be continuously updated. Students can freely access the online textbook and use software help section to enhance their skills.  

 

Attendance:

Participation items include: understanding and uniting with instructions, attentive attitude, and classroom cooperation. Projects and assignments must be always submitted by the due date, with the notification to the instructor by email. Delayed submission will result in lesser points. Disruptive attitude, Talking excessively ( against classroom etiquette ), Tardy, Unexcused absence, Class suspension will result in minus points accordingly.

Attendance Policy

 

Lack of attendance as following will result in the subtraction from 100 total points of the grading scale.

 

Unexcused absence is minus 10 pts           

Tardy is minus 1 pt,

Tardy for more than 5 minutes is minus 2pts

Leaving class early without permission is minus 1 to 2 pts

Disruptive or disrespectful behavior  minus 2 to 5 points        

 

The disruptive or disrespectful behavior could result in class suspension

Suspension will be minus 10pts per day
